Mr Griswold scores again at Cranbourne
Three-year-old Mr Griswold has continued his rapid improvement with an outstanding win at Sunday’s Cranbourne meeting.
Mr Griswold went into the Ivan’s Pies Country Showcase 0-68 Handicap (1400m) with plenty of confidence after his last-start win at Bendigo but the gelding had a rise in class and an awkward draw to contend with at Cranbourne.
Andrew Mallyon took the son of Good Journey forward from barrier 11 and was caught wide in the early stages before getting in to sit outside the early leader.
Mr Griswold was left in front when the pacemaker punctured at the 400 metres but the gelding showed a handy turn of foot to put three lengths on his opposition.
A late charge from the runner-up, Nenagh, whittled the margin back to a length but Mr Griswold was never seriously challenged in the straight before recording his second win from four starts.
“I really like this horse,” co-trainer Simon Zahra said. “He puts himself in the right spots up near the speed over the longer trips and he always gives his best in the straight.
“If he keeps producing those sorts of efforts, he’s going to win his share of races for a while to come.”
Zahra said the team would need to assess how Mr Griswold pulled up from the run before deciding his next run.
